Environmental Thresholds
The intent is to create a safe neighborhood by making a park that acts as a space for the people from the settlements and the city to walk and experience the terrain and the vegetation. The park adds a layer of community to the area.
Form exploration
The material chosen to deal with the terrain and the nature of the program was ferrocement.
Internally, the space was imagined with smaller zones and pathways that then connect them. Each zone could have a program, and the spaces between these two programs could be strips of untouched land where one can experience the wilderness of the shrubs, the natural terrain, etc.
The process started with identifying different forms that could afford movement activities such as walking and meandering. The built form is imagined as an undulating form that creates various levels and a new ground for the park. These levels then become small pockets where shops, stalls, etc could be set up. The idea is to create a form where one can experience the terrain in a softer, subtle way. The experience of the imagined space could be something similar to that of trekking on a hill.
Internal movement
Park movement
The park and the internal spaces get connected to each other through balconies which act as skylights for the internal spaces. When one is walking inside, there is always a pool of light that connects one to the outside, whereas when one is walking outside the constant visual connection to the inside evokes curiosity and thus the park in a way attracts people to the conservatory.
Sectional explorations
The internal spaces become cave-like where light seeps in through windows which also act as ledges and skylights. The layer of existing trees on the site adds a feeling of earthiness to the labs and research zones. Thus the experience of being in a conservatory is completely reimagined and there is a constant negotiation between the inside and the outside. Seating around the trees connects to the memory of learning in a village where one gathers around the shade of the tree.
